Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Homeschool chat / Location(s) for classes

Depending on how large a given class is, do we want to assume we're always meeting at someone's house? If we give large classes, we might want to look into a library or church space for meeting. Has anyone got ideas about this?

Julie S. just told me she may have a lead on a room at a church we might use -- apparently the church is generous enough to host many other groups (Boy scouts, etc.). Julie is registered here, so I hope she'll post more soon.

This is Julie, I think I can finally get this computer to let me post something on here. I tried on Friday but got locked in or something with an annoying box continuously popping up. I'll keep trying. So here's what I was going to say on Friday: I have checked with Cherry Hills Library about possibilities of us meeting there this summer. They have a lot going on this summer and said that it would be better to wait until the fall to try. They have had homeschooling groups meet there in the past, so I think this is a possibility for us or at any library in Albuquerque. Next, I have to call someone at a church I know of that is open to many groups meeting there. I'll inform you all soon.

I called the Holiday Community Center on Comanche by Tramway and they sd that the outdoor pavilion might be available for use but during the school year they run a kindergarten. I can follow up w/ Dennis Sanchez when you all have a better idea...I called the Main Library in Alb and they recommended calling each library where there is space as each might have their own policies on conference room use. Tramway and Lomas didn't want us (at all) but Cherry Hills was more user freindly. No fees, can reserve two months ahead of time, no food, no drink, clean up after yourselves, that type of thing... Seating for 30 but you have to put chair and tables away after you use the room. I left a message for Hoffmantown Church but I'm still waiting for a response. Ppeople might want to ask at their church, synagogue, mosque, etc. as to whether they would consider donating space a couple of times a week. I can also call UNM's Continuing Education Building but I think you wanted to keep it local to the NE area. Any suggestions?

Wow, you did a lot of work! I think Julie contacted the community center by Holiday Park too. The price was something like $40 to use the indoor rooms -- is that right Julie? Anyway, we're certainly looking for a low-cost/no-cost solution. Thanks so much for your hard work.

Yay! Julie S. just called me to tell me she had found a location for our co-op classes. It sounds wonderful -- a classroom at the Heights Cumberland church at the corner of Academy and Moon. The room is reserved for our use from 10am to noon every Monday. What's more, it's FREE (though we should definitely donate something to the church. We can discuss this later).
We'd like to start using this room instead of people's home as soon as possible. I'm certainly glad about that. The class at my house this week was pretty much at maximum capacity. Julie has offered to inaugurate our new classroom in style with a Spanish class this Monday (8/4) at 10am. Since Kristin is teaching a German class the following week, all we need for a full roster of foreign language classes is one more on August 18th. Any takers?
Here are Julie's directions to the classroom:
Located on the corner of Moon and Academy N.E.
Entrance is off of Moon St. When you drive into
parking lot, take an immediate right. Do not park in
the lot next to Academy, just stay to the right.
Then, continue around towards the back of the church
where you will find their educational building. We
will meet in room # 403.
