Albuquerque Homeschool Forum  /  Introductions  /  New to Albuquerque and homeschooling

My name is Lupe and my husband Tony and I have just moved to Albuquerque from El Paso. My son suffers from Reactive Airway Disease.  He is suppose to attend Govenor Bent but they do not have a full time nurse and we are not comfortable with him "self medicating."  I am a Texas certified teacher.  My specialties are reading and writing.  His teacher gave us all his workbooks before we left.  I do have a basal reader but I am not sure what kind of science or social studies topics we need to cover.  Could someone help me out.  We are leaving off Osuna, in an apartment.  I have managed to find grocery stores and the Coronado Mall, but we have only been here since Saturday.  My son misses his boy scout troop and school pals.  I miss everything!!! :(  We were told that Albuquerque would be great.   We are hoping that is true.  Joining such an organization sounds like what we need.  If anyone lives close to me I'd appreciate a line or two.  I also need information on state standards, grading system records etc.
Thanks bunches
Lupe

Hi Lupe--welcome to Albuquerque.  NM has virtually no standards for homeschoolers.  It is just a one page form to fill out within 30 days of starting to homeschool.  One place I get quite a bit of info from is http://www.cape-nm.com.  Actually, their web site isn't the greatest but it does have numbers you can call.

Welcome Lupe!  How old is your son?  Like Michelle said, virtually non-existent standards.   It does get better!

If you are looking for the state standards that the public school system follows, you can find them here:  http://www.ped.state.nm.us/cilt/standards/

Michelle,
My son is 7 years old.  He was in the first grade in El Paso.  If you have to notify 30 days before, does that mean that I have to put him in school first before I can start to homeschool?

I can answer this.

No, it just means that within 30 days of starting to homeschool him, you have to let the state know that is what you are doing.  So after you move here, you need to send the form into the state w/in 30 days.  Actually, I filed online and requested a written statement from the state.

The link for online notification is on the right side of the page.  When I submitted it, I requested confirmation by regular mail so that I'd have paperwork.

Hope this helps!
