A biologist may fondly remember family trips to the zoo, aquarium, beach, or mountains. The naturalist may remember long, slow nature walks with a loving adult. The mathematician may remember playing simple dice games. Whatever sparked that persons interest in math or science probably happened at an early age. As homeschooling families, you know the delight of seeing your childrens excitement about learning something new AND you understand how that excitement can lead to all kinds of other subjects.
Sylvan Dell Publishing is a young company on a mission to create picture books that excite childrens imagination, are artistically spectacular, and have educational value. All of our books are fun, warm stories for children, generally fiction with math, science, or nature themes. We then add a 3-5 page For Creative Minds section that includes fun facts, crafts, vocabulary and games to reinforce the educational value and to be used as a subject guide. Finally, each book is carefully vetted for scientific accuracy by nationally recognized experts in the field (NASA, NOAA, SeaWorld, etc). We think our recipe optimizes the pure reading enjoyment for the child, while still providing an opportunity for parents to strike while the iron is hot and take advantage of a childs interest in a subject.
The owners of Sylvan Dell Publishing, Lee and Donna German, homeschooled their three children. Like many homeschooling families, they took advantage of every opportunity possible and noticed that their children learned more and became more excited about subjects with hands-on experiences. The concept behind Sylvan Dell books evolved from this observation and is based on please-touch museums and the Jr. Ranger Programs at US National Parks. Lee and Donna also understand the financial commitment to homeschooling. For that reason, they encourage homeschooling families to request their local libraries to purchase and make these books available.
Please help us to spread the word about these books to homeschooling families and to anyone who may be interested in sparking childrens interest in math, science, nature and the environment. Feel free to forward this e-mail to educators of all types, librarians, parents, grandparents or anyone who loves and wants to share the joy of learning with children.
