On the second Saturday of each month, Lowe's hosts a building workshop for children, free of charge. I believe it starts at 10 a.m. and lasts one-hour.

On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot offers the same sort of workshop between 9 a.m. and noon. (It only lasts that long if there's enough interest.)

These are free programs and great for both genders. Free aprons and eye protection are usually included and available for take-home. Certificates are personalized and offered at the end for successful completion of the project. Lowe's gives a patch and a sticker. Home Depot gives a pin for clothing. These are fun to collect and/or scrapbook. Take your camera . . . it's a hoot!

First Fridays Fractals: In the LodeStar Planetarium

Plant Identification: Ever wonder what the names of all those wildflowers and plants are? Let a SMNHC instructor help you identify the trees, plants, and flowers of the Sandias.

The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center is an environmental education center located in Cedar Crest. The center teaches over 10,000 students a year about the Sandia Mountains, ecology and conservation.

Sandia Mountain Natural History Center's First Saturday Series
The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center will be opening its doors to the public the first Saturday of every month between March and September. All Saturdays will include self-guided hikes, two hands-on exhibit rooms (Eco-Casa and Explorer's Center), and a bird viewing deck. Every month will have specific themes such as birding, guided hikes, and family days. Education sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. Special equipment such as GPS units, field guides, and binoculars will be available in limited numbers for check-out from the SMNHC staff.

Meet the colorful characters who put the wild in wild west!
Mountain men and women will demonstrate their skills and spin tales
of the past at encampments throughout the ranch. Flint knapping,
panning for gold, hide tanning and bow making are just some of the
activities your family will be able to observe and participate in.
Limited activities on Friday.

Celebrating New Mexico Music & Dance
August 11-12
10 am - 4 pm

There is a lot more to New Mexico music than Mariachi!
Influences from native cultures, Mexico and Spain will be celebrated,
but we will also look at things a bit closer - tracing the origins
of Flamenco back to Egyptian belly dance for example.
Local musicians and dance groups will educate and entertain you; and
children will enjoy a castanet workshop and making their own musical
instruments from recycled objects.

Uniquely New Mexico: Food, Art & Adobe!
August 25-26
10 am - 4 pm

A million things make New Mexico unique. On this weekend, we�ll celebrate three of them. Sample foods made from traditional recipes and using crops grown on the ranch; make adobe bricks and learn the basics of building with them; paint a retablo with a master santero or learn to do decorative tinwork with an hojalatero. You will leave with even more love for the Land of Enchantment than you came with!

ALSO: New Mexico is known for balloons! Weather permitting, your family will be able to take a ride in a tethered hot air balloon. (This has previously happened during Fiesta de los Ninos)

with the materials warehouse and his information was outdated.
Paul Griegos (APS,848-8852) informed that the materials are held in the yard for
a given amount of days required by the state and then given to auction houses.

Barnaby Bear Star Gazer Party

Join HCS Creative Endeavor's for a free educational community event! Barnaby Bear's Star Gazer Party will be held Aug. 25th at the Paradise Hills Park! Join us for star gazing, hands-on educational activities, crafts and games. Barnaby Bear, the literacy bear, will be the "star" of the evening. He will teach kids about the night sky, read a story, and sign autographs, while spreading the word that "Readers Are Leaders!" Activities will be provided by Radio Disney, Rio Grande Astronomical Society, ABQ Rocket Society, New Mexico Kids,Albuquerque/Bernadillo Library, ABQ Ride, and the Albuquerque Home Learners. Join the Boy Scouts at their "Camp Adventure" booth. The Girl Scouts will also be at the event to teach kids how to make silly putty as part of their "Girl Scientist" booth! The City of ABQ Parks and Recreation will provide a climbing wall and World Balloon Promotions will be at the event with a HOT AIR balloon! Barnaby Bear will look forward to seeing you there! PLEASE BRING A BOOK TO DONATE!: We will be collecting children's books to donate to ABQ RIDE's "Discover A Book Program" as part of our Barnaby Bear and Books Literacy Program. Books we collect at this event will be placed on the city buses for children to read while riding the City of Albuquerque's Transit system! Best Homemade Salsa Competition
Do you think you make the best homemade salsa in Albuquerque? If so, enter the Homemade Salsa Competition. All participants are required to attend a City-provided class on preparing and serving food to the public. This class will be held at 3:30 pm, Tuesday, July 31 at South Broadway Cultural Center. Our Folk Art Festival is August 11 from 11am-4pm in Robinson Park. It's a wonderful family and community event, so be sure to come. It starts with a giant puppet parade at 11 am, followed with live music, belly dancers, art tents for kids, 75 folk art vendors, food vendors, etc. It is a fabulously fun event! The Education Resource Center is a ministry of CAPE-NM, located in
Albuquerque at Grace Baptist Chapel, 12201 Comanche Rd. NE.
Open two days a week, the ERC provides a staffed facility where veteran home
school "experts" can provide advice, support, and encouragement, along with
curriculum consultation, a curriculum library, home school supplies, testing
and referrals, and home school community resource information. Over the
years, more than 4,000 books and reusable resources such as microscopes,
telescopes, and math manipulatives have been added to the lending library.
In addition, a mentoring program links experienced home school families
with beginners.

The first weekend of August, starting at 12:01 am Friday morning, August 3rd, and ending at midnight on Sunday, August 5th, marks New Mexico’s 3rd annual tax holiday. School supplies, computers, clothing and shoes can be had at local retailers tax free.

Personally, I prefer to stock up on school supplies every August at Target. Every week they have different specials. I've bought packs of glue sticks, colored pencil sets, notebooks, tape, etc. for very cheap there (like 10-cents apiece). Usually I try to buy enough to last the entire year.
