Update;  They are all sold

UPDATE:  THE CHICKS ARE NOW 2 WEEKS OLD (AS OF 2/21) AND WE HAVE 7 LEFT TO SELL

Howdy!  We ordered chicks who arrived safe and sound this afternoon.  They were born this a.m. or last night, in Iowa, took at plane trip to NM, and were picked up at the post office two hours ago.  They've had a loooong day!

We ordered 25 HENS, and they sent two bonuses, so we have 27 total, and we are selling half of them.  We had to order a minimum of 25 to avoid having a few roosters filled in w/ the order!  So, they are $5.00 each, and they have had the Merek vaccination.  If you would like to buy some, I can tell you exactly what they need as young chicks, if you haven't raised chickens before.  They are in a kennel in our playroom right now and are absolutely adorable & peeping away!

They are Red Stars, and my hubby did extensive research on breeds - like.... he was on chicken websites constantly.... for what seemed like ridiculous amounts of time to me.  lol
Anyway, the Red Stars are super egg layers as well as being very sociable and friendly.   They are egg layers NOT meat hens.  Let me know if you're interested in some fine feathered friends!

What timing!  We are just gearing up for our first chick order and some of them were going to be Red Stars.  We would love to have 2-4 of them, but we need to set up our brooder box first.  We will probably be ready by this weekend.  I did have one question - since you have them inside, are you using a IR lamp?  Oh, and where do you live  ;D?
Thanks so much,

LeAnne - Out of curiosity, I went to the hatchery website to see the availability, and sure enough, it's males only now for the Red Stars.  We placed our order in Nov. for our Feb. arrival of FEMALE Red Stars.  Wow - they do sell out fast! My hubby was so bummed in Nov. when they sold out, knowing he had to wait til Feb. to get them.

Good to know.  Just curious, but what hatchery did you use.  We were going to use MyPetChicken but they start shipping at the end of the month.  We were worried about shipping the chicks so we're just glad we can get some of the chicks locally.  Thanks again

We went thru McMurray in Iowa.  They've got a great reputation, and all our gals arrived alive (you always wonder) and perky.   If you go to their website, you can read testimonies from customers and see the wide variety of chickens they have.  I was glad not to go thru a feed store, as we did that once many years ago, and 4 out of the 5 "female" chicks we purchased ended up cock-a-doodle-do-ing!!!!  Not good!!  We don't eat meat, so we ended up having our share of roosters until a friend of mine who ran an animal sanctuary was able to take a couple of them to live on her large farm.  Also, we have found that a lot of the chicks that come from the feed stores live in cramped, filthy conditions - I'm not saying every feed store has such conditions - but we ran into that more often than not.

P.S.  We ordered the green nutrient grow gel to be shipped w/ the chicks - you feed that to them for the first couple of days w/ their chick feed - it worked very well - so I would recommend that when you order the rest of your flock.
