Home Depot & Lowe's KID Workshops

On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot offers the same sort of workshop between 9 a.m. and noon.  (It only lasts that long if there's enough interest.)

These are free programs and great for both genders.  Free aprons and eye protection are usually included and available for take-home.  Certificates are personalized and offered at the end for successful completion of the project.  Lowe's gives a patch and a sticker.  Home Depot gives a pin for clothing.  These are fun to collect and/or scrapbook.  Take your camera . . . it's a hoot!   Take advantage of it!

On the second Saturday of each month, Lowe's hosts a building workshop for children, free of charge.  I believe it starts at 10 a.m. and lasts one-hour.

Sat Jul 4: Oohs and Aahs
Albuquerque's annual fireworks and entertainment extravaganza at Balloon Fiesta Park (9401 Balloon Museum NE) explodes again from 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. This year hear tunes from South by Southwest, Savor and The Blues Brothers Revue, a tribute to the comedic duo of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. Admission to the events is $2, and children 12-and-under get in free. Between 4 and 8 p.m., catch free Park & Ride services from St. Pius High School on the Westside and Coronado Center on the Eastside. For more information, call 311 or visit cabq.gov/crs/FreedomFourth.html. (Adam Fox

Sat Jul 4: Red, White and Blues
Before you and your family don those $5 American flag tees and watch some fireworks light up the sky, head over to Powdrell's (5209 Fourth Street NW) for the First Annual Duke City Blues and BBQ Fest. Doubling as a fundraiser for the African American Museum and Cultural Center of New Mexico, the fest features blues performers, spoken word by Hakim Bellamy, storytelling with July Rose and booths from the African American Artist Guild and others. Tickets are $15 and $20, which includes food and a $5 donation to AAMCNM. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., so get there early and get your barbecue fix. Call 345-8086 for more information and a complete schedule of entertainment. (Adam Fox)

Sat Jul 4: Red, White and Q
Burque's largest outdoor market did it again.
Transplanting from the Caravan East parking lot a few years ago to Talin's, the Albuquerque Growers' Market has moved once more, settling in for its 2009 season at the ABQ Uptown Shopping Center lot (Louisiana and Indian School). That's where it'll stay until November, from 7 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Saturdays--and that includes this Fourth of July. Your all-American cookout demands nothing less. (Laura Marrich)

Wilderness Survival in New Mexico
                              Sunday, July 12
                            10:00 am to 12 noon

After spending 2007 living primitively in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey Mike Bochnia, tracker and survivalist, has settled back in New Mexico . A ten-year veteran of Tom Brown’s Tracker School , Mike has learned and practiced the skills of living close to the earth, both in Asia and North America . Having lived most of his life in New Mexico Mike has an intimate understanding of New Mexico ’s wilderness and will share his knowledge with you during this lecture and demonstration.

During this program Mike will cover the subjects of observation, awareness, tracking, and emergency shelter, food, fire and water. Bring a notebook if you want to take notes, water, and sunscreen as this program will take place outdoors on the visitor center patio. At the end of the lecture Mike will demonstrate a primitive fire making technique using a bow drill.

This lecture and demonstration will take place outdoors on the patio at Petroglyph National Monument ’s visitor center located at the intersection of Unser Blvd. NW at Western Trail. The visitor center is wheelchair accessible. This program is free and open to the public and is first-come, first-seated. Bench seating is available or bring your own chair. Call
(505) 899-0205 ext. 332 for more information.
