Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Introductions / Going to School & Homeschooling?

Hello All!
My name is Julie and I am a mother of four wonderful children ages 6,4,3 & 2. I have been contemplating homeschooling since my son entered APS last year. I am still working on my degree and my husband works full-time. I was wondering if there are any other homeschooling moms who also work or go to school--and if so, how do you do it?
I have looked into both the Family School and regular at-home-instruction, and while it's all appealing, it feels a bit overwhelming at the same time.
Thank you for your time,
Julie

We own a business that we both work in nearly every day and we have 4 kids. We put our 9 yo in a charter school last winter, because we were feeling his day was not full enough (not academically, just otherwise). He likes school, although we have found that he was learning more in a couple of hours a WEEK than he has been learning in school. And I still believe this charter school is a better school than many.
It takes so little, academically, when you can get straight to the point with your child. If you can help them have an enriched life with the rest of your schedule, I suggest you give it a try. The academics are easy. Use cheap workbooks, used textbooks, internet worksheets, many various classes offered around town & through HS groups, etc, etc....
Every family does it differently. There is no wrong way. Find what works for you. Try different things. Of course, check out the park group & get support and ideas from others.

My husband and I both work, although I am now part time. I try to handle 'academics' in the mornings, when he is fresh, and the afternoons and weekends are all the other activities he learns from, whether it is baking with me, hammering wood on the house with dad, or playing a board game. We use Sat and Sun, as Ben has no consideration as to when schooling 'should' be. So far, so good. Trust what your instincts tell you.

Do a search for Family School, as there have been posts previously. ANd there are several families here who have alternative arrangements to the typical dad works, mom stays home to homeschool arrangement. Each family find there own way and makes it work for them. In fact, flexibility can be a BIG benefit of homeschooling.

Both my husband and I attend school. I like taking as many online classes as possible. It frees up my schedule. My husband likes taking only 12 credit classes on campus. We try to get all our on campus classes back to back on the same day. We plan to have our son in a after-school program. That will give us 3 hours a day to take classes on campus, grocery shop, and all the boring adult things while he makes new friends. We'll both take turns taking night classes and taking care of him. One thing that has really help us is having a bed-time / our homework time.
