This class is free to homeschool families!  

The class will include a brief history of Medieval armor with some examples to touch, hold and try on!  
Students will learn the basics of making European 4-in-1 chainmail, along with an introduction to some of the other European as well as Japanese styles.  
Students will get to make a chainmail project to take with them.  
There is no age restriction - however, students need to be able to successfully use and manipulate pliers, so take that into consideration before signing up.  
We will also go over the design and creation of chainmail-inspired jewelry
. . . definitely NOT Medieval, but the process for making the jewelry is the same as for making armor . . . just a little different application!

Home Depot & Lowe's KID Workshops


On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot offers the same sort of workshop between 9 a.m. and noon.  (It only lasts that long if there's enough interest.)

These are free programs and great for both genders.  Free aprons and eye protection are usually included and available for take-home.  Certificates are personalized and offered at the end for successful completion of the project.  Lowe's gives a patch and a sticker.  Home Depot gives a pin for clothing.  These are fun to collect and/or scrapbook.  Take your camera . . . it's a hoot!   Take advantage of it!    

On the second Saturday of each month, Lowe's hosts a building workshop for children, free of charge.  I believe it starts at 10 a.m. and lasts one-hour.

Recycled Art Fair

Part of the fun may be to take home a new skill or craft with you.  
Descriptions of several FREE workshops and demonstrations for all ages both Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th are below.  
Thanks for sharing in a weekend celebrating the concept of repurposing and the value of public lands.

Coming in May to the Open Space Visitor Center gallery: "Pollination":  art show and workshops exploring the role of pollinators with New Mexico Wax.

Food & Life Series

The Food and Life Series is an exciting public education program at the Maxwell Museum that explores the cultural significance of traditional foods and the historic and modern uses of regional plants in health. Keynote speaker Gary Paul Nabhan, Ph.D., will kick off the series with the lecture “How Traditional Foods Interact with Our Inheritance, Culture and Health.”

Nabhan is an Arab-American writer, lecturer, food and farming advocate, rural life­ways folklorist, and conservationist whose work has long been rooted in the U.S./Mexico borderlands region and who has written several books including Why Some Like It Hot, Reviving America’s Food Traditions, and his most recent Where Our Food Comes From.

The series continues May 1st at 1pm with Paleoethnobotanist Lisa Huckell who will provide an overview of wild plants that have been used by past and contemporary Southwestern cultures and discuss their relevance for modern diets with a focus on more healthful eating.  
Huckell has been a practicing paleoethnobotanist for more than 30 years, investigating the interrelationship between people and plants of prehistoric and historic cultures in the Southwest and California using plant remains recovered from archaeological contexts.
Following the lecture participants are invited to sample of modern recipes that use ancient ingredients provide an entertaining and educational activity that challenges participants to “try something old that’s new.”
