Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Introductions / Hi, nephew with autism, volunteer?

Hi there,
My sister is homeschooling my six-year-old nephew with autism. We were wondering if there were any other home schoolers out there with children on the spectrum, that we could maybe socialize with and to trade ideas.
Also, if any high school kids would like to volunteer to interact with my nephew for a few hours each week, it would be a great opportunity for them to learn about autism and interacting with kids with special needs. I am in medical school at UNM, and I could offer advice on college and med school.
Thank you,
Leslie

Hi,
My daughter is almost 7 yrs old and she has Aspergers and OCD. We're not currently involved in any therapy programs so I don't have any advice to offer. My daughter tends to get overwhelmed and stressed in large groups, so we avoid attending most play groups or large organized field trips.
We live in the East Mountains.

Leslie,
My son Sterling is 13 and would be interested in volunteering to interact with your nephew. He's good with other children and loves being around others.
Talk to you soon,
Lara
