The Albuquerque Concert Band has been elevating the Albuquerque cultural community with fabulous performances of band music, for over 40 years.
The City presents five FREE "Concert Band" performances at various parks throughout the city giving folks an opportunity to enjoy an evening of wonderful music in their own backyard.

Concerts are held on Wednesday evenings during the summer months.
You may bring your chairs, blankets, picnic/coolers, etc. and relax, dance and listen to an array of concert band presentations.

EVENT DETAILS:

WHEN:  June 5th starting at 8:00am until about 1:00pm.

WHERE: The Elena Gallegos Picnic Area/Albert G. Simms Park in Albuquerque.  
            The Elena Gallegos Open Space is located east of Tramway at the end of Simms Park Rd., just north of Academy.  
            Parking is limited so please carpool!

REGISTRATION:  Register at Recreational Equipment Inc (REI) by calling 247-1191 or stop by 1550 Mercantile Av (I-25 and Montano).

ACTIVITIES:  There will be activities for all ages and fitness levels.  
                   Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  
                    Volunteers will work on over 10 different conservation projects including trash cleanup, land restoration, trail maintenance, and new trail construction
                    in the Sandia Mountains and Open Space trail systems.

WHAT TO BRING:  A hat, water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, work gloves, and lots of enthusiasm!  
                          The Sandia Ranger District and Albuquerque Open Space will provide all tools and instructions.  
                          Please leave your pets at home!

AFTER EVENT PICNIC AND PRIZES!  At the end of the event, we reward our volunteers with a free lunch and lots of prizes donated by our generous sponsors!  

National Trails Day is celebrated with special events throughout the United States and is considered the largest and most influential trails celebration in the country.  
Every year, the American Hiking Association helps citizens organize hundreds of trails projects throughout the country.  The Open Space Division and other local organizations including the U.S. Forest Service, REI, Friends of the Sandia Mountains, and the Open Space Alliance have planned an exciting day of trails projects that will take place at the Elena Gallegos Open Space.  The theme for NTD 2010 is “Find Your Happy Place.”  This is your opportunity to get outside and contribute to our outdoor recreational heritage by improving and maintaining the Sandia Foothills trails systems.  


National Trails Day serves three main purposes:  1) Educate the public on the importance of trails and their conservation; 2) Strengthen alliances of different agencies that work together beyond National Trails Day; 3) Create new trail advocates.  

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY IS SPONSORED LOCALLY IN PART BY REI, WHOLE FOODS, LA MONTANITA COOP, THE OPEN SPACE ALLIANCE, FRIENDS OF THE SANDIA MOUNTAINS, and SPORTS SYSTEMS.

2010 Summer Food Preservation Classes

Making Jams and Jelly: June 15th from 9-12
Homemade Pickles: July 14th from 9-12
Canning fruits and vegetables: August 25th from 9-1
Freezing and Drying foods: August 26th from 9-11

All classes will be held at the 4-H Center;
1500 Menaul NW (just west of 12th St. on Menaul)

Registration is required, and the fee is $10 for each class

Open Space:  A Retrospective Saturday, June 12th        10:00 am – 12:00 noon
Since its inception in 1984, the Open Space Division has been working to preserve environmentally and culturally important lands throughout the Albuquerque area.  Much of what defines Albuquerque and makes it unique is its “open” and undeveloped spaces such as the cottonwood Bosque of the Rio Grande Valley, the Sandia Foothills, and the volcanic escarpment and grasslands of the City’s West Side.  This rare opportunity for members offers a front seat to a key player’s account of the Open Space adventure.
The Open Space Alliance is a nonprofit group of volunteers working with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division to enhance our quality of life through:
*  Increasing awareness of Open Space lands
*   Building and strengthening partnerships with groups who share Open Space values
*   Promoting conservation, acquisition and stewardship of Open Space lands
*   Strengthening volunteerism and community outreach programs
*   Providing financial support

COOPER’S HAWKS OF ALBUQUERQUE:  Slideshow, discussion and live birds  Saturday, June 12th  1:00 pm
Kristin Madden, Clinic Director for Wildlife Rescue Inc of New Mexico and a field biologist for Hawks Aloft, Inc., is studying factors influencing nest-site defense by Cooper’s hawks for her Master’s degree.  She will discuss the natural history of Cooper’s hawks in general, including identification tips and rehabilitation stories. Background information about Cooper’s hawks in our area will be presented, along with preliminary findings from Kristin’s current study.

Good Morning Albuquerque Homeschool Families!!!


Just a reminder - Nine Men Morris is coming to the Cherry Hills Library on June 8th at 10:30 am!  This is a fun, Medievlish game that was quite popular throughout Europe - it's even mentioned by William Shakespear in A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Every family that comes to the class will go home with a nine men morris gameboard so that you can play at home.  Later in the month, I'd like to hold a nine men morris tournament combined with a simple fund raiser for Medieval Living - more on that during the class on June 8.  Please note: this class is a morning class, rather than afternoon!  Hope that works out better for everyone.
