Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Introductions / New Middleschool Homeschooler

Hi. I will be homeschooling my 13 year old daughter, Kelsey, for the next year or two, getting her ready for Sandia, and saving her from the local options which have proved problematic. I was a school teacher in Vermont for a long time, and am excited about doing this with her. I found a job that gives me early mornings and Mondays at home, and hope to find some volunteer activieties and clubs to fill in her days. I am comfortable with the academics and music, but need some regular programs for helping with the social connections. I really want her to make and keep friends in this process. I would be pleased to swap any of my own skills (M.Ed., MSW, guitar, chess and soccer) for arts, languages, drama or volunteer activities. Gary

Hi Gary,
Welcome to homeschooling! Drop me an email and I will send you info about some great volunteer service learning groups with children your daughter's age. I also know some people who offer drama opportunities.
Again, Welcome!

Howdy and welcome!
I too have a 14yo daughter (just turned 14 last week), and she is one busy little homeschooler (ok-she's not so little anymore, but she is busy!)!!
Many of the tween/teen groups don't meet over the summer, but a few do! Come on down next Tuesday afternoon, if you're free, to the Erna Fergusson Library (San Mateo, just south of Montgomery in central Albuquerque) just before 3pm. The Albuquerque Gavel Club meets there (Toastmasters for kids-all ages, all homeschooled) and they have a good time with a lot of kids Kelsey's age. It's a public speaking group for kids, where they run the show, hold office, give speeches, etc. and the parents hang back. She'll get paired up with another person around her age who will explain what's going on during the meeting so she won't be lost. Then, while the kids do their thing, the parents can tell you all about the other groups they're involved with too! (We have actors, musicians, cadets, horseaholics, karate kids, you-name-it!)
If you can't make it Tuesday afternoon (mtg runs from 3-4:30pm), drop me an email like Kari and I'll share what other groups and subgroups of this board we connect with too.
Bienvenidos (welcome) and happy homeschooling!
:) -Chris
