Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Introductions / NE Heights Mom of 4 Starting Today!

Hello,
My name is Julie Coburn, and I have four children ages seven, four, three and two. Today I have submitted my request to home school and withdrew my oldest from APS after three years of deep consideration. My oldest, Warren, is seven and is extremely bright, but has problems waiting in class. He finished his 30 page packet of homework for one week in 15 minutes with no errors, so he becomes bored easily and causes disturbances in class. The problem is he is very social (me not so much), so that is why I tried public, charter and private school before home schooling. Well now we are here, he is nervous because he won't have friends, I am nervous because I'm a bit of an introvert, but I'm trying to reassure him that through this website and other resources we can find someone who just might have the same interests.
So just a little bit more about myself is that I am 29 working on a double major in Psychology and Sociology. My background is in law enforcement/public safety before I had children. I am married to a wonderful man whom I met in prison (I was doing a transport and he was the facility's LT). I plan on going to graduate school hopefully by Fall of 2012. I would like to see about any exchange classes that meet every now and then, and I am willing to start a class in areas that I'm strong in.
I'm looking forward to meeting new families and taking a path less walked. Thank you for your time to read my post.
Regards,
Julie Coburn

Hi Julie!
Starting homeschooling can be exciting yet overwhelming time. We're here for you! This group is a great first step, and once you get access to the members area of this board you'll see that there are lots of classes and field trip opportunities going on.

Welcome, Julie. What part of the NE heights are you in? I have a 7 year old boy who is also very social. He does love homeschooling! It's good for him because he has a hard time being still. I hate to think how he would be in a public school classroom.

Hello Julie, this group is very laid back, not a lot of formal classes (there are some), but lots of socializing and support, and wonderful families of all kinds. I suggest you come to a park day, and meet some of the families. There are a lot of HS activities around town, through many different groups. Lots of us participate in several groups & can help you find stuff that works for you and your family.
Hope to meet you soon!

Thank you everyone for your welcoming comments. I will try to do my best to participate in a park day, but Thursdays are filled in for us for right now.
Regards,
Julie

I am offering a free drama class at McKinley Comm Center at Monroe and Comanche on Oct 22 Friday..and they wanted homeschool kids before their other kids come at 3. So ll to 2 is open...What time is best for homeschoolers? "
I have a psychology degree and put my two older children through APS. After much involvement and also careful consideration I decided to homeschool my two younger children. It has been a wonderful experience for all of us. They are now 13 and 11. I have to say that there are lots of activities you can get involved in so that your son doesn't miss out on social activities. My older children are now 21 and 19 and are attending UNM.

Julie...I have an 8yo who is extroverted and I am introverted. She needs to be out with people more..and I don't. My 6yo is introverted as well.
So I empathize it is an interesting situation to find balance in.
I'll tell you that we have. It took a while..but trusting that the resources you need are there and the family will find a rhythm to it all...are big helps to the process. My extrovert is getting her needs met without overwhelmning the introverts. ;~) There are so many homeschooling activities and group opportunities for meeting other kids.
IN the same vein...my girlfriend sent her 3 girls to Family School this year after homeschooling them for a few years. They were excited about being with other kids..well they have had to add Brownies for any social time with other children. lol.
