It’s that time of year again – time to get ready for the Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair.  
This year our fair will be held Friday, January 21st, 2011, at Heights First Church of the Nazarene on Paseo del Norte
(between Wyoming and Ventura on the north side of the road – same place that we’ve always held it).

We hope you will consider participating with us.  Our fair is open to all homeschoolers from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as children in family schools, charter schools, or other schools who want to participate in a science fair, but do not have one available to them.  Our policy is that we will never turn a child away from our science fair who wants to participate.  We will have independent judges (no homeschool parents), and awards will go to the top three projects in the junior division (grades 6 – , and the top three projects in the senior division (grades 9 – 12).  Children participating at the elementary level (grades K – 5) will be judged and will receive awards.  Also, an overall, best-in-show award will be presented.
We’d really like to have anyone, grades kindergarten through 12th, participate and will help in any way we can.  If your child has any question(s) concerning their ideas, project, methodology, analysis, etc., please don’t hesitate to have them email (hallen@swcp.com) or call (821-3612).  In a few minutes we might save the them hours of time, especially if they’re stuck.  Also, if you’re participating in another groups’ science fair, you’re welcome to ask questions of us, share any information we provide with others, and we’d love to have you come see our fair.

There is a Scientific Review Committee (SRC) set up for the purpose of reviewing protocols.  If you, or anyone you know, is conducting a study requiring an SRC review, let me know and I’ll direct you to the right place for that review to happen.

Last year we sent 7 students on to the Central New Mexico Science and Engineering Research Challenge.
This year we hope to increase that number

I hope this information helps you as you get started.  We have opted to err on the side of sending this to you concerning the science fair.  If you are not interested in receiving this information, please let me know and I’ll take you off the list.  If you find that these attachments, or any information that I distribute concerning the science fair might be of use to others, please don’t hesitate to forward it on to them for their use.  Or, better yet, invite them to join with us this year.

Kids to dance with new governor

Gov.-elect Susana Martinez is promising to dance the electric slide, the cha-cha slide and the two-step with kids who attend
the first-ever Children's Ball on Inauguration Day.

Each child will also receive an illustrated children's story about the life of the new governor.

The ball will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 1 at the Santa Fe Children's Museum. It is open to children ages 5 to 11, with one adult chaperone per child.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held earlier in the day at the Santa Fe Plaza beginning at 10 a.m.

A Coronado Elementary School student, also named Susanna Martinez (but with two N's) will deliver the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.
The governor-elect visited the 6-year-old's Albuquerque Spanish-language immersion magnet school after her election and brought the youngster a T-shirt reading "SusaNNa Martinez for Governor — 20Something."

The Children’s Ball is the Governor-elect’s idea, an official with the inaugural activities told me. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 — along with one adult chaparone — are invited to come to the Children’s Museum for the two-hour event. A disc jockey will be on hand to play music and the kids will get a chance to “dance with the governor,” the official said.

There will also be face-painting, photo opportunities and each child will receive a gift.
The museum has room for about 600 and “we’ll go in shifts if it gets too full,” the official said.

There is no formal dress code but “we encourge the kids to come in dressy or fine attire,” the official said.

As for the public reception at noon at the Museum of Fine Arts, a reception line will be formed so that people can shake hands with the new governor as well as Rep. Steve Pearce, former US Senator Pete Domenici, Secretary of State Dianna Duran and Lt. Governor John Sanchez. No photo opportunities will be allowed.

Are your high school age students interested in an environmentally-focused leadership workshop?
The New Mexico Envirothon is hosting a workshop on January 21st at the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center (http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/smnhc) that will include hands-on activities and learning in the following areas:

-Aquatics
-Soils
-Wildlife
-Forestry
-Estuaries

Transportation/carpooling may be available, so please let me know if you have interested students.
This workshop can be used to help prepare for the NM Envirothon competition (May 6-7, 2011), but this fun event is open to anyone.
