Senators Bernadette Sanchez and Sander Rue have requested that as many people as possible way in on two proposed senate bills that would affect a communities' ability to create new school districts within APS, now or in the future. Regardless of how you feel about the proposed creation of a new Westside district, these bills would either make the creation of new districts more attainable or more difficult for communities. The Senate Education Committee will hear the first bill Friday morning.
The current legislation has three different methods for the creation of new districts:
existing school board vote, 60% petition signatures w/in proposed new district, Secretary of Education
SB 219 lowers petition requirements. Senator Sanchez will be amending her bill Friday to lower the petition threshold to 10% of registered voters within a proposed new district.
SB 351 would eliminate the Secretary of Education's ability to create a new district, thus removing one avenue for communities' interest to be heard. The bill would also expand the petition requirement to the entire existing district, rather than to the community requesting the new district.
