"Ikebana" is from the Japanese ikeru (生ける?, "to place, to arrange, life, birth") and hana (花?, "flower").
More than simply putting flowers in a container, ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Contrary to the idea of floral arrangement as a collection of particolored or multicolored arrangement of blooms, ikebana often emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis toward shape, line, form. Though ikebana is a creative expression, it has certain rules governing its form. The artist's intention behind each arrangement is shown through a piece's color combinations, natural shapes, graceful lines, and the usually implied meaning of the arrangement.
This two hour workshop will take place on Monday, March 7th from 1.00pm to 3.00pm at the Albuquerque Garden Center. Our teacher will be Sylvia T. Webb, who also has experience homeschooling. Ms. Sylvia will teach us the history and simple beginning steps of Ikebana and the children get to make and take home their own composition.
The cost of this workshop will be $5 per participant and for this amount Ms. Sylvia will provide us with a space to do the workshop plus flowers etc, with the exception of a Kenzan,
needed to make the arrangement. Kenzans come from anywhere between $5 to $30, depending on their size. Ms. Sylvia will make all the Kenzans she can spare available and you can arrange with her to either just use it and give it back after the class or purchase one from her. She has several small ones that she would sell for $5. Also, the Kenzans can be often found on EBay, at the Garden Center shop, Michaels, Big Lots, Hanayagi and if you are so lucky, at thrift stores, so keep your eyes open.
Ms Sylvia would appreciate if you could bring a large garbage bag or newspaper to work on and a low casserole dish or any low dish (check out the thrift stores and your attic and shed). Another possibility is to use an empty tuna-can or similar and spray-paint it black. Also, please bring a pair of scissors or small garden shears.
There is no age limit for this workshop, however, in case of really young children, a parent present would be advisable. This workshop is open to both children and parents to participate, provided they pay the $5. Non participating, assisting parents are free.
We both realize that two hours may be long for the really young or the really fidgety and Ms. Sylvia has no problem with parents and children leaving once they are done and before the entire class is over.
There is a maximum of 15 active participants, feel free to forward this invitation to any (homeschooling) parents you feel would be interested. It will be first come, first serve.
Would this workshop be a success (which I am convinced it will be) Ms. Sylvia is willing to consider this as a repeating event for homeschoolers, which I think is pretty cool!
