Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Introductions / Newbie from Oregon

Hi, Our family of 5 is relocating in May to ABQ. My hubby is getting a job transfer to the North Valley.
Anyway, we are from Oregon, so I'm going to feel like a fish out of water moving to the desert, but I think it will be nice to get some sunshine in my life. :)
First, I'll tell ya a little about me.
I am happily married.
I am a mother to a 17 year old son, and 2 little girls ages 6 and 8
I've been homeschooling for 11 years.
We live an Organic lifestyle.
I'm an artist. I've worked at a childrens Theatre for 6 years as a sceanic designer and painter.
As for my kids, they love to be out side, but since it rains SoOoOOo much, it's hard to enjoy being outside unless you don't mind getting wet or muddy.
We do go camping alot in the summer and enjoy hiking/nature walks. My girls especially love climbing Mountains.
As for Homeschooling, I'm a bit easy going. I don't really like to follow schedules. I'm not an Unschooler, but, I'm not an orderly homeschooler either. Not sure which category of homeschooling I really fit into. :)
Anyway, I've been doing alot of research about ABQ and it looks great.
Still not sure where we will be living, but that will eventually happen in time....I hope.
Looking forward to gettting to know some of you.

Hi,
I too am happily married.
My wife and I have twin six year old daughters (Iris and Margaret) who love the outdoors (and a nine year old son who grudgingly goes on hikes with us too). Sandia mountain is nearby and my kids have done a lot of hiking in it. They're already pestering us to start hiking again.
When you get to Albuquerque, bring your kids to the Thursday park day and don't forget the sun screen. I'm sure our girls will eventually find your girls. Somewhere around here I have a book on kids' hikes that I can take to park day (I guess I have until sometime in May to find it) and lend you.

I don't think they will know what do do in it.:P We've been having record amounts of rain here in Oregon..it's not even funny.
In fact we haven't seen the sun in about 28 days now.

Welcome to New Mexico! I was born in Oregon, and still have family there- it's gorgeous, but we love the sun here. :) Once you're here, you should check out one of our park days- it's an easy way to meet lots of us all at once! There's park day info on this thread-

Oregon is Beautiful. I've never lived in a High desert area before. I can't imagine not having much rain.
As for the park....Hopefully everyone wears a name tag. :P

Well, I'll admit that remembering names is not my strong suit... and we won't quiz you on all of our names! :)

looking forward to meeting you all. I'm Linda-and have two girls. 6yo and 9yo:)
We relocated her just over a year ago from New Zealand. ABQ is a great sized city-big enough to have variety of stuff to see and do, but no traffic! :)
I have to say, the sun...gets to me after a while. I think I am the ONLY one. lol. But it great most of the time.
Sending you easy moving and transition vibes ♥

Wow..all the way from new Zealand? That must be a trasition for you. And I thought I was having a hard time with moving from one state to another. As for the sun, I can be light sensitive at times. I burn easily and if i'm in the sun too long I get migrains. So I don't think you are alone when it comes to the sun issue. And..... people think I'm crazy moving to New Mexico with all that light. :P I'll survive.
Hopefully our girls can meet up sometime. Looks like we will be in new Mexico around the 26th of May, staying at a KOA for awhile until we find a rental.

BTW, Are there homeschool groups for specific areas of ABQ? Like groups for the Cabezon, Rio Rancho or North Valley area? OR..is everyone just grouped together?
Not that it really matters....I'm Just wondering how ABQ works.... :)
Every state works a little different when it comes to homeschooling.

Hello, My name is Barbara and my husband and I have a lovely 4yr. 3 month old daughter who loves so many things. We do homeschooling with a few other familes, take music class at UNM Music prep school, the Biopark Beginnings class, the Popejoy hall school series theater program season ticket holders and what ever else strikes us to do. We love to meet others who love to be with their kids, be outdoors, see cultural events and find ways to inspire our daughter to learn. A friend and I will be coming to park day in a few weeks, but until them I'd like to make some introductions in order to not feel so "new" when we show up ;-). There are lots of playgroups out there that we've tryed, and now we want to concentrate our energies on homeschooling for the social as well as academics. Please contact us with an "hello!" and hopefully we'll meet some of you soon,
