Albuquerque Homeschool Forum  /  Introductions  /  wondering about HS

Hi, I am a mother of two children. My son is 9 and my daughter is 8. I am thinking about HS my daughter. I want to leave my son in public school because he enjoys it, he is good at it, and he is very social. My daughter on the other hand hates school. Every morning it is a fight. She has been diagnosed ADHD and is on medication now. I have seen some improvement. This year both of us do not like her teacher. She is rude to my daughter and makes it obvious she doesn't like her or me! I have talked to her about HS and she seems to show some interest. I live in Farmington and so far I haven't found any support groups or anybody to talk to about this. I feel like HS has a bad image around here. I guess I am just looking for some support and maybe some ideas on cirrriculum. I am leaning more towards non-religious programs. Please! somebody message me back!

When I first started to homeschool my daughter (8 years old at the time, now 17) it was very 'hush hush' and many thought I was making a big mistake.  In less than a year, people were commenting on how much she had changed, and how delightful, pleasant and polite she had become.  Her (and my) personal story is long, but suffice it to say, I saved her.  Public school is not right for all children.  Trust your heart/gut.

The beauty of homeschooling is that it can take many different forms; you don't have to recreate the classroom in your home.  You don't have to follow an exact curriculum.  You get to do what's right for your child.  Some days will be better than others, but over time, the positive far outweighs the negative.
Visit your library/bookstore/Amazon.com to find books on homeschooling.  Google it.  You will find lots.

Try not to worry about what others think - your job is to see to your daughter's needs.  And you can always go back to public school if you decide it's not right for  you/her.
Hang in there.

I look at it this way: if it's not working, it's not working. How much better could it be? How much worse could it be? Take her away from this person that doesn't like her or you, even if you decide to send her back in August. But if you love it and she loves it  (as many of us do!) you can stick with it.

:-) Diane
