I'm already thinking about next year and what to do about science.  I keep hearing through the grapevine that there is a woman who teaches science classes to homeschoolers in ABQ. Anyone know someone who does this?

Thanks,
Kara

Thank you very much.

Are there any secular options for science tutoring/classes?

Kara, you could check out the ABQ Homeschool Science Co-op at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AbqHSSciCo-op/
We just joined this year, and it's great!  And it is secular.

Kara,

Another option is to join the Albuquerque Homeschool Enrichment Community. They are offering Real Science for Kids classes on an ongoing basis. My son is ten years old. For children in his age group they are studying ten weeks each of physics (completed), astronomy, and geology this year. They are also offering classes for younger children. I know this group has completed chemistry, is studying physics now, and I'm not sure what the third unit will be - biology? There might be other science options that I am not aware of coming up in the spring semester as well. Use your search engine to look up Albuquerque Homeschool Enrichment Community (AHEC, also know as the Homeschool Ravens).

Explora offers homeschool science classes as well. When Justin was younger we loved the Biopark Beginnings program. The Albuquerque Museum of Natural History trains children to be docents, which can be an excellent hands-on learning opportunity for some. We have enjoyed summer classes at Explora, the Nuclear Museum, and the Rio Grande Nature Center. You might also consider Junior Ranger programs through our National and State parks and through the Sandia Ranger District.

Hope that helps!

Melissa

Great suggestions - I'm taking notes from you ladies!

Wanted to just add that if you fancy plant sciences,
the Junior Master Gardener curriculum and local groups delve deeply into Biology & Ecology and there are lots of incentives that can be earned.
