Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Homeschool chat / returning math lessons?
Posted by: Lynds, July 9, 2011, 9:12pm
Hello All,
I am strongly considering returning to teaching classes and private students - I miss it so terribly much. Every now and then I bump into one or other of you and I find myself yearning for those inquisitive little minds and rewarding leaps and bounds. I'm wondering whether there is still a need for classes though - I have been away for a year and thought I would just test the waters first.

We would love to be involved. Math is fairly intuitive for H, but I'm finding out it's NOT for L- we'll keep an eye on this thread!

What do you do in the classes? What age level?

YES YES DOUBLE YES! We keep asking ourselves "Where is Lyndi? Why isn't she teaching us again?" We would come back to your math classes in a heartbeat! By the way, I hope all the transitioning has been good. Looking forward to catching up with you.
(Thanks Karen for the personal email invite about this link. I always appreciate your acceptance of my computer communication incompetence:)

Wow, you guys, I am very touched. Thank you so much.
Kim, I use a Montessori approach to Math and I teach children from age 3 years to ... (Karen how old are you? :}). I try to evaluate each kiddo and then meet the child's individual needs.
My next step is to find a suitable place and possible times. I will keep you all updated.

Thanks Angela - I've sent you a reply.
I'm still trying to find a place to work from - promise I haven't disappeared into the wild blue yonder.

Well, it seems that most of the locations I have researched will only be available once the school's have started their new academic year. Although I am very excited to put classes together, it will make more sense to wait till early September. In the meantime I shall shape some crazy, wild fun Math magic into practical classes with actual age groups, times, costs and some outline of a curriculum. Are there particular days that would work more easily? Tuesdays rather than Thursday etc? I know mornings are usually better than afternoons because it is easier to concentrate but any other restrictions?

Thursdays are park day and opera. Fridays are many co-ops. But you won't be able to please all of us, I know!

That's a good start Amylee, thank you. I know I can never please all but my goal is to at least please most :) .

Tuesday or Friday are the best days for us.

We have Tuesdays open so far for this fall.

Looks like Tuesday might be the best choice. What I'd like to do is separate by age at first - I know that is very artificial but because I don't know all your children and what they are doing mathematically, it is just a starting place. I would prefer to group by ability and interest so that children can find academic peers and work together is they would like to.
Many of you already know that I use a Montessori approach which means that the children get to choose what they would like to do BUT from a limited set of materials that focus on a specific skill. For example if Jonas seems ready to tackle multiplication and the squaring of numbers he can choose from a variety of materials but only in the multiplication area. It will be clearer when everything is put into action.
I am not available the first week in September but what about starting on the 13th? I will contact some of the libraries and churches and find out if that works. I know most of the public schools start before the end of August and many of the private schools go back by then too.

That will work for us Lyndi...will wait for details...Thanks!

Would this be weekly and will you have a set cost? I am very excited you are returning to this!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Lynds, August 9, 2011, 8:39am; Reply: 26
My plan is to do this weekly and yes, to have a set cost. (I'm a little excited myself, Amylee). Andrew is already starting to say things like, "Mom, look at that, you could use it in your math classes....".

Tuesdays are ok as long as they don't conflict with the co-op Lego Club.
Posted by: Lynds, August 10, 2011, 9:02pm; Reply: 28
There's a Lego club? Wow! I'll be sure to work around them, thanks Julie.

Hi Lyndi! I just saw this. Michael would love to take Math and any other classes you might offer again. Tuesdays would work. I am struggling to get our schedule for this year organized :)

Tuesdays are good for us! Lego club is in the afternoon, so maybe Tuesday mornings are good? \
As a side note, I always forget to check the public boards... will you/someone post on the private side when it's set up? I'll try to remember to keep checking here, though. :)

Hello Lyndi,
I would love to be in one of your math classes for my 4 y.o. daughter. I just saw this and don't know what has been established for classes so far. Do you charge and how much? When would you be teaching this age group. What day and time?
Please contact me asap!
Thanks!!

Thanks!

Just found this thread....looks great! Have the classes started already?

I haven't heard anything further. Lyndi, if you are still looking for a place to hold classes, you might try the new North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center at Wyoming & Carmel NE.

Thanks Julie. I am having a very hard time finding a location - my only hold up at the moment. We've moved so all the old haunts are now very far for me. Wyoming and Carmel sounds great. Thank you, I'll give them a call today.
Just because of my difficulty with space, I have started doing some one on one tutoring until I can find a classroom so if you're desperate, please let me know.

Does anyone know of a place that is available to rent/lease? I would probably need at least 400 sq ft and would prefer to be able to set up my room and keep it that way without needing to share the space. I am aiming at doing classes often enough to keep all the materials in place all the time.
I would prefer to stay in or near to the North Valley or Rio Rancho just because of timing with taking my own children to school in the mornings.
Thanks All.

Hello Lyndi,
We have not met but i would be very interested in your class for my girls as well. About a space...have you tried the Raymond Sanchez Community Center on 4th st., just north of Alameda? Jennifer D mentioned to me that they have 2 large community rooms, and this is where they have been holding the homeschool rec. days twice a week. I looked up there contact info, it's 505-468-7800 and their address is 9800 4th ST NW 87114. Of course, they will be closed tomorrow for Veteran's day. I live in the North Valley, so if that space is not the right fit, i will keep my feelers out and see if i can help find a suitable space.
Thanks,
Deborahlise
