Albuquerque’s Big Read in October celebrates the work of Edgar Allan Poe – which should be very good and spooky, just in time to gear us up for Halloween! To launch the month-long chill-fest, ABC Libraries holds an Edgar Allen Poe Funeral Party on October 7 at the KiMo Theatre, and admission is free!
The performance part is by Lou Harmon with readings, background on Poe’s life, and what they call “direct audience interaction”. I hope the interaction doesn’t include ravens. (As per his famous poem: The Raven.) There will also be prizes up for grabs for those who come in costume as Edgar Allan Poe or any of his characters, human or otherwise. They say the event is suitable for middle school ages or older.
Kick-Off Event - Poe Funeral Party Come commemorate Poe with an interactive performance and costume contest. Coinciding with the anniversary of his death, Edgar Allan Poe will be brought to life by performer Lou Harmon for our Big Read kick-off. The event will feature dramatic readings, historical biography and direct audience interaction. Participants that come dressed as Edgar Allan Poe or one of his characters could win a number of prizes! We kick-off at 7 p.m. on October 7th at the historic KiMo Theatre.

Our understanding is that schools are not open for outsiders to come on to school grounds, but some schools may invite parents to attend the launch. Everyone else has to take a perch nearby to watch the balloons.

Albuquerque Aloft has grown tremendously since the first event in 1990, and continues to bring the joy of ballooning directly to children in their school playgrounds. It is a great way to kick off the beginning of the nine days of Balloon Fiesta every October. Parents, students and teachers alike have the opportunity to meet the pilots and crew, and experience the excitement of watching and learning how a balloon flies. Albuquerque Aloft also provides city residents and guests a visual preview of Balloon Fiesta, as balloons launch from different sites around the city simultaneously.
Balloonists at selected schools may elect to fly from the campus or may remain inflated at the school site. Weather permitting; inflation is scheduled at approximately 7:00 a.m., with launch scheduled for 7:25 a.m. The simultaneous launch is coordinated by KKOB AM Radio, the “official voice” of Balloon Fiesta. Schools are encouraged to invite parents and students to be on hand for the event, and groups at some schools offer refreshments for sale, adding to the fun.
Albuquerque Aloft is the only Balloon Fiesta event in which balloons launch from pre-designated sites outside of Balloon Fiesta Park. The following is a list of the participating schools and the pilots that will be launching from each school.

The Albuquerque International Festival is free for all, on Saturday October 1, from 10 am – 5 pm. It’s held at Talin Market and includes crafts, a kids’ zone, and of course plenty of exotic world foods, plus entertainment.
Showcasing a sampling of all the food, music, dance and art the melting-pot International District has to offer. Take in karate demonstrations, traditional New Mexican music, Native American jewelry and more while learning about services in the resurgent neighborhood. Oh, and you might want to save the best for last; Steps' food cart pod, a one-stop shop for mobile morsels found across the city.

FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 - 12 offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety along with instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment. The Jemez Mountains Elk Festival is hosted by the Valles Caldera National Preserve, with some events taking place in nearby locations. Many elements of the Elk Festival are free, including daily activities at the Valles Caldera Visitor Center, free self-guided hikes, and spotting scope booths on the trails to see the elk herd in the Valle Grande. Others will charge event or admission fees.
We’re seeing sessions on wildlife scat and sign scouting, how to throw an atatl dart, and how antlers grow. The free Annual Open Air Market at the Walatowa Visitor Center, Jemez Pueblo on October 8-9 includes arts and traditional Jemez dances.

¡Viva la Fiesta! Enjoy panoramic views of the Rio Grande, the Bosque and the Sandia Mountains during Fiesta of Cultures, a celebration of local traditions including Pueblo, Hispanic and Anglo. The emphasis is on craft demonstrations, folk art and pre-industrial lifeways. Before overcrowded freeways and information highways imposed the relentless sameness that is modern living, life here in the Rio Grande Valley followed the more natural rhythms of spring flood and fall harvest. There was a season for everything, “and a time for every purpose under heaven.” The importance of these natural rhythms is reflected in the care and skill that our ancestors lavished on such seemingly simple tasks as: carving a drum from a cottonwood stump; dying skeins of wool for a blanket; or forging a horseshoe with a hammer and anvil. This event is geared toward families with children. There is no admission charge for any of the Fiesta of Culture activities. Food vendors will be available.

The celebration of the Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead» is rooted in both indigenous Mexican and Catholic religious beliefs. These traditions center on honoring and celebrating the Dead. In the last few decades celebrations of Day of the Dead have increased in popularity throughout the U.S.
The resulting, often humorous view of death as part of the life cycle provides and opportunity for families to gather and remember their loved ones. The sugar skulls, papel picado», food, paper flowers», skeleton puppets» dance and processions that occur during this time encourages participation and expression on a variety of levels.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will perform at the Kirtland AFB Open House on Oct. 9. The Kirtland AFB Open House is a free event and the general public is invited to attend.
(NM) KAFB Open House and Air Show: Kirtland Air Force Base will host an open house and air show Sunday, Oct. 9. Gates open to the public at 9 a.m. The event will feature aircraft static displays, military working dog demonstrations, aerial performances by the US Air Force Academy “Wings of Blue” parachute team, and the highlight of the day will be a performance by the US Air Force Thunderbirds. Stop by the Sandia 60th Anniversary display and bring your children by to make a solar bead bracelet or work on an electric circuit set. The event is free to the public. Train Tracks in your Garden- Train Show http://www.cabq.gov/biopark/garden/events/train-tracks-in-your-garden-train-show/ Enthusiasts from the New Mexico Garden Railroaders Club (NMGRR) will demonstrate how to bring backyard gardens to life with motion and sound through the use of miniature, G-scale trains and their unique, complementary landscape.
Special displays for this fun annual event will include electric and live steam trains, character trains, sounds of choo-choo and the chicken dance. Including permanent and new displays for the event, there will be 10 trains running simultaneously on 2000 feet of track this weekend!
Club members will showcase their personal collection of model trains in active displays and share pictorial displays of set-ups in local backyards. G-scale experts from the club will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice on how to get started. The members of the NMGRR Club have over 200 years of combined experience, and some individuals have been "railroading" for over 20 years!
The Botanic Garden's Railroad Garden has 1200 feet of permanent track and is the biggest G-scale layout in the state. Club members will make the complex come alive for visitors by sharing background stories about the Botanic Garden's permanent garden railroad display, with its villages, tunnels, trestles and mining scenes.

ABQ Boy's Choir Fall Concert October 22, 2011 @ 7pm @ First Presbyterian Church
Routes Rentals & Tours offers the first ever haunted bicycle tour in ABQ. The Routes Rentals & Tours Halloween Tour De Frights bike tours take a 2.5 hour ride around haunted Albuquerque. The Routes and Rentals Halloween tours are for adults and “oober-brave” kids aged 12+, starting at 7 pm every night excluding Sunday from October 20 – 29, 2011. The terrain is moderate, starting near Old Town, and refreshments are provided at the end of the tour. If you rent a bike for the tour, the cost is $35. Bring your own bike and the tour is only $25. (You must have front & rear safety lights.) It’s fine to dress up in bike-safe Halloween costumes. Spaces are limited to 16 riders per tour, so book in advance.
The Trolley of Terror from ABQ Trolley Co. and Tours of Old Town takes a 1.5 hour jaunt through haunted Albuquerque. Due to the adult subject matter, they’re giving the tour an ‘R’ rating = this one isn't for kids. The open-air trolley leaves from Old Town on Friday and Saturday nights at 7 pm or 9 pm from October 14 – 29. Tickets are $35, or $30 for seniors 65+ and students with ID. Seats are limited so book the Trolley of Terror in advance.
The Tours of Old Town Ghost Tours take place as usual through October at 8 pm every night, including Halloween night. Tickets for the 90-minute walking tour are $20 with a price break at $18 for seniors 55+, military personnel, and college students. Take ID. Children aged 13-17 pay $16, or it’s $10 for ages 6-12. Kids 5 and under go free. Old Town's Fall Festival was initially founded as "Dia Del Dulce," during which the Old Town merchants would hand out candy and treats to the kids from the surrounding neighborhoods.
