Two Albuquerque traditions - Menaul School and the Bugg Christmas Light Display - come together again this year to brighten the Albuquerque holiday scene. Walk-through displays featuring handcrafted characters started by Norman and Joyce Bugg nearly 40 years ago at their home in Northeast Heights have been expanded with energy-friendly LED lights, solar-powered battery technology, and new displays designed by Menaul School staff.
Hours are 5-9 pm on Opening Night, December 9th, and 5:30-9 pm on other nights. The display will be open until 11 pm on Christmas Eve.
Opening Night on Friday, December 9th, will feature the Bugg Light Community Band organized by John Truitt and directed by Joy Boehning. The Albuquerque Boy Choir and the 2nd Presbyterian Youth Choir will also be on hand to entertain on opening night.

Christmas at Kuaua: Holiday After-hours at Coronado State Monument, Bernalillo
Get into the holiday spirit with an evening of family fun at this free after-hours event! The grounds of Coronado State Monument will be decorated with hundreds of flickering luminarias and thousands of Christmas lights. Activities start at 5:30 pm with Santa’s Workshop: children, assisted by a few kindly elves, will have an opportunity to make their own Christmas tree ornament. Beginning at 6:30 pm, the Friends of Coronado State Monument will sponsor a program of music, traditional Pueblo dancing and Native American storytelling. Winterfest The city of Rio Rancho and the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center proudly present Rio Rancho Winterfest 2011, which will feature a variety of activities taking place in the City Center area on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The schedule of events includes:
• 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Santa Ana Star Center: free ice skating (skates will be provided; inexperienced skaters are encouraged to bring bike or safety helmets), free sampling of new concessions at the Santa Ana Star Center courtesy of Ovations Food Services, and a historical retrospective on display to mark Rio Rancho’s 30th anniversary provided by the Rio Rancho Economic Development Corporation
• 5 p.m. outside Rio Rancho City Hall: holiday lighting ceremony for the City Center including 10,000 luminarias on display as well as a hot air balloon glow
• 5:15 p.m. parade kick off: Winterfest Parade, which has a theme marking Rio Rancho’s 30th anniversary, will start west of the Santa Ana Star Center and travel on Civic Center Circle past City Hall, west on King Boulevard, south on HP Way, and end back at the Santa Ana Star Center
• 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. inside Rio Rancho City Hall: pictures with Santa available as well as free hot chocolate
•6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at UNM West campus: create free holiday arts and crafts, and enjoy refreshments and storytelling
• 7 p.m. fireworks display (donated by Western Enterprises) over the City Center area

Winterfest event parking in the City Center will be available via King Boulevard and Arena Drive. Access to the City Center will not be available from Paseo del Volcan to allow for the parade.

The city of Rio Rancho is now accepting registrations for the Winterfest Parade. The theme for this year's parade in recognition of Rio Rancho celebrating its 30th anniversary as an incorporated city is “Rio Rancho Then and Now: 1981 to 2011." Participants are encouraged to construct floats that express the spirit of the holiday season and represent an aspect of the city from the past 30 years. In addition, all floats must be well lit through the adornment of holiday lights, and use of LED low-energy lights is recommended.
Parade registration can be done online by visiting the city’s Web site, http://www.ci.rio-rancho.nm.us/parades, or paper forms can be obtained at the Rio Rancho City Hall offices of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
The fee to take part in the parade is $15. Payment can be made at Rio Rancho City Hall or over the phone at (505) 891-5015. The city accepts credit cards (Visa, Discover and MasterCard), checks and cash. The deadline to register and pay applicable fees for the Winterfest Parade is Friday, Dec. 2, 2011.
The City Center area can be accessed either of the following ways on Dec. 10:
a) From I-25, take the U.S. 550 Bernalillo exit and head west on U.S. 550 through the intersection of N.M. 528/Pat D'Arco Highway until you reach Paseo del Volcan. Turn left onto Paseo del Volcan and travel on this roadway until you reach Unser Boulevard. Turn right onto Unser Boulevard and make a right onto either Arena Drive or King Boulevard.
b) Proceed north on N.M. 528/Pat D'Arco Highway into Rio Rancho. Make a left on Southern Boulevard and then a right onto Unser Boulevard. Travel on Unser Boulevard and make a right onto either Arena Drive or King Boulevard.

The Albuquerque Concert Band has been entertaining Albuquerque for more than 40 years, and they’re staying true to form with a free concert of holiday music.
The Albuquerque Concert Band free holiday concert is this Sunday December 4, at 3 pm, at the KiMo Theatre. I love holiday music, and nothing could keep me away from this free concert, although I shouldn’t tempt fate, should I? But short of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer crash-landing on my head, I’ll be there first in line!
