The Albuquerque Astronomical Society
OAK FLAT STAR PARTY

The public is invited and encouraged to attend

As anticipation grows for the annular solar eclipse, don't forget the glories of the night skies! The first star party of the season will be held on Saturday, May 12th at the Oak Flat Picnic Ground/Juniper Loop south of Tijeras. The event begins at dusk, but the gates will be open several hours prior for astronomers to set up their telescopes and equipment and for the public to arrive with light to park and access the field. As always, it is requested that headlights be lowered/red if approaching after dark and that only red lights be used around the scopes to preserve night vision. Oak Flat is always a wonderful event, enjoyed by the astronomers and the visitors alike, with a fine array of telescopes and members of TAAS happy to talk about the night sky objects. Please stay tuned to the webpage for updated information or any possible changes.

Corrales Heritage Day 2012

Corrales' spring celebration of its history is held at the Old San Ysidro Church and Casa San Ysidro in the village's old plaza on Old Church Road. It is usually scheduled for the Saturday before the Sunday in mid-May when a special outdoor mass is performed outside the Old Church to honor Corrales' patron saint San Ysidro. At Casa San Ysidro, the City of Albuquerque, through the Albuquerque Museum, sponsors demonstrations of traditional New Mexican crafts such as paper-flower making, paper cut-out art, blacksmithing, and weaving. Other activities include churro sheep shearing, goat cheese tasting, bread making in the horno, and tortilla making.

Hispanic musicians perform and there is usually a llama, burro and a horse to pet. The Corrales Historical Society puts its archived materials on display in the Old Church including historic photographs, videos of Corrales farming and interviews with long-time residents, and special historic exhibits. Activities for children are also scheduled at the Old Church, including making traditional tin ornaments and shelling corn.

The 2012 Heritage Day will be Saturday, May 19, 10-4 pm at Old Church. In addition to the usual historical activities, the new video "Heart of the Village: a History of the Old San Ysidro Church" will be available for viewing. Additional details can be found here.

For further information on Heritage Day, email or phone the chairperson at 898-5017.
