Albuquerque Homeschool Forum  /  Homeschool chat  /  Thinking about homeschooling (far NE)

Hi,
We are new (sort of) to ABQ and our 8yr old son is attending Double Eagle ES.  We live in the far NE area.  I personally think that the school here isn’t that bad, however, nowhere near great.  We started to think about homeschooling and my wife contacted a group in a church.  I went to their meeting once and was shocked about what they have been teaching the kids.  The entire meeting was condemning others who’re not Christianity fundamentalist, and I just cannot accept that the Earth was created some 6000 years ago.  Condemning and scolding Muslims, Mormons, gays, Democrats and Obama become part of their writing assignments.
I’m looking for an unbiased group in ABQ, hopefully without any religious or political flavors.  I will probably still send my kid to the public school and gradually start homeschooling if things work out right.  I was wondering if there any of such homeschooling group in the far NE?  Attending the park days in the summer may be a good starting point.  Any scheduling info will be helpful.
Thanks.

Hi Johnny and family,

Wow, what a sad thing you witnessed when you visited that church-based homeschooling group.
In no way is that typical of homeschooling; sadly, it gives us all a bad name.
Rest assured, there are MANY wonderful groups in Albuquerque that you can explore that are all-inclusive and much more balanced.
I highly encourage you to shop around and join as many of the local groups that pertain to you.  There is no need to be loyal to just one.
Enjoy the give-and-take of each depending on how much y'all can handle.

Just to name a few . . .

1.  ABQ Homeschool Co-op (w/ a social-focus and some ongoing classes)
2.  Albuquerque Homeschool Enrichment Community (w/an academic-focus, no socials)
3.  New Mexico Homeschool Community (an information outlet and more)
4.  Albuquerque Homeschool Science Co-op  (science programs)
5.  Albuquerque Homeschool Adventure Club  (activities & meet-ups)
6.  Albuquerque Unschoolers (meet-ups & more)
7.  ERC - Enrichment Resource Center on Comanche (clearinghouse of info & more)
8.  Rio Grande Homeschoolers

and many, many more . . .
Each group has their own pluses & minuses; regardless, you'll learn how to maneuver, who you "click" with as a family, and what your kiddo likes.
Draw the best from each, give back as much as you can, and compassionately handle tolerable/forgivable flaws.
It may take you a little while to find your niche, but you will.  Press on, mom & dad.  You guys will be fine!   :D
This journey is truly worth it - you won't be alone.  There are 1,000s of homeschoolers in ABQ alone!   ;D

P.S.   Johnny and family, this is the public-area of this forum.  Did you know there is a member-only area that is just as large?
This co-op has weekly park days . . . coming to one and meeting the members is the first step towards accessing the member-only area and learning
about the interesting things going on in this group.  Shop us - see if you like what's going on here.  And continue to shop around.
No need to subscribe to just one.  It is sooooo important to gradually "get your footing" in your first year of homeschooling.
Be super-duper patient with yourself . . . and know we've ALL been there.  :D

You don't have to have it all figured out fast . . . think of this 1st year as a courtship of homeschooling.
Allow the process to be a bit bumpy.  Extend compassion to yourself.
Your family is flexing new muscles and you'll feel a little sore at first.  But you will get SO STRONG if you keep flexing those muscles  :D  It will happen!
