Albuquerque Homeschool Forum / Homeschool chat / Girl Scouts ~ any interest??
Posted by: RebeccaL, July 23, 2012, 3:31pm
I am considering doing a homeschool girl scout troop/group. My daughter has been doing scouting for three years as a Juliette (lone girl scout) but there are reasons why a troop would be better. I have been a Girl Scout leader in the past. I had a homeschool troop when my older girls were young and I was a Girl Scout myself for about 9 years. My daughter is going into 5th grade and is a Junior GS but we could do a group of mixed ages if there are younger or older girls interested. My emphasis would be on life skills like cooking, sewing, money management and outdoor skills such as camping, hiking, outdoor cooking, and wildlife identification. I would like to have a year end goal that involves a fun outdoor/camping experience such as a trip to White Sands or Carlsbad. I live in the NE Heights near Juan Tabo and Comanche and the meetings would most likely be at my house.
I have found over the 20 years that I have HSed that Scouting is a great supplement to the regular curriculum. It is a fun way to incorporate Science, History, Geography and Home Economics. I use it on a daily basis with both my boys and my girls and I feel that it has given them real life knowledge that has served them as they move into adulthood.
If you think it sounds interesting and want more information before making a commitment I would be happy to talk to you and answer questions. At this point, I am trying to get a gauge on whether there is enough interest to move forward so let's open a discussion about it!!

Hi! What a great idea! I have a 5 year old daughter. At what age do Girl Scouts start? I was thinking 5 may be more Brownie age?
Thanks!

We are new to Albuquerque and previously were involved with girl scouts in Seattle before a major life upheaval of my hubby going back to school (in Las Cruces for 3 years). The girls & I are trying to regain our groove and scouting just might help. I have 3 girls, age 5, 8 and 11. The 8 year old was previously a Daisy scout and the 11 year old was previously a Brownie. We've not been in Scouts since 2009. Right now, I am only homeschooling the 8 year old, but am seriously considering pulling my 5 year old from kindergarten (that, too, has been a rough start). Anyhow, thanks for posting this idea. You can reach me at my cell phone 575-571-3875. I'd consider co-leading with you, if you'd like that kind of help. Kerianne :)

Hi Rebecca,
Has your troop started yet? I am a troop leader for another homeschool troop and we are too full to accept any more daisies but I have some contact information for a family that would like to find a troop for their five year old. Can I email you their info?
Thanks!
Jana

Rebecca! Thank you for the offer to co-lead the Daisies/Brownies and for a spot in your troop. We are really please with our situation though and will refer anyone we know who might be looking for a troop, to you.

Hi! I'm new to the group, but would love information about the Girl Scout troop if there is any space available. My daughter is 6 and was in a Daisy Troop last year and we need to find a new troop for our homeschool hours if we can. She has a few of her petals from last year, and I would hate to have her miss her whole flower. I'm also background checked and had some leader training if it would be helpful to expanding or running the group. My email is chrissy@creatingsomething.com if that helps. Thanks!
