Parents of K-8 Home-Schoolers:
Would you like assistance with teaching a content area?
Multi-age classes are offered in 6 week session intervals beginning Sept 19. The 6 week sessions will continue throughout the school year and end in May.
Classes are being offered in math and writing for the first 6 weeks. The content areas offered in each session will be based upon student need, so if math and writing continue to be of student need, those content areas will continue; if students have other needs that parents request assistance with teaching, future 6 week sessions can be designed around requested content areas.
Sessions will include 1-2 optional outings as a group for social interaction and content area enrichment. Parents provide transportation. First session: Sep 19 - Oct 31 Sept 19 Assessment Day 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Outing scheduled for Oct 31 to Popejoy Hall for the 10:15 showing of Ugly Duckling.
Second 6 week session Tue Nov 5-Tue Dec 17 (minus Thanksgiving) Outings scheduled for Nov 14 (Popejoy Hall 10:15 showing of Dream Carver) and Dec 3 (Popejoy Hall 12:15 showing of Nutcracker)
Math and writing sessions • Small group, multiage • Includes differentiated instruction, dynamic grouping of students based upon skill, and individual instruction as needed • Includes hands-on center rotations for content application and social integration • Will align instruction with Common Core State Standards as a minimum • Sessions will begin with individualized assessments to determine strengths, growth areas, and learning style
Teachers: Co-taught by 2 caring, highly qualified and experienced teachers that are Nationally Board Certified and also hold NM Level 3A K-8 Instructional Leader Licenses
Holly Wu: She has been an educator for 10 years, including K-12 district administration, and has been tutoring home schooled students for an additional 3 years. Her Bachelor's and Master's in education include a math minor, reading specialist, and English as a Second Language Endorsement. Tutoring began when her daughter was born, in order to stay home with her. She began tutoring from her home, and most of the students she tutored were home-schooled; their parents requested someone to fully teach or supplement/support a certain content area. Thus, these small group home schooling sessions have evolved.
Val Sahyoun: She has been an educator for 21 years and has taught grades K-6. She has a Master's Degree and an endorsement in Language Arts. For several years she was the Math Instructional Coach at a K-6 school where she facilitated professional development for teachers as well as worked with students in Math remediation as well as enrichment courses. She currently works part time as an educational consultant.
