I live in the East Mountains and would like to join in on a park day. My son is very social and while he would be due to begin kindergarten next year, I would like to homeschool him in a dependable and social atmosphere. I couldn't quite figure out how to check where park day meets. Please let me know, would love to meet the group. Thank you,
Sonya

Computer Programming Classes Posted by: Emily Mulder

June-August 2013 – Introduction to Programming

What:

This summer I will be teaching an introduction to programming using the Python programming language.  This will provide a basis for further study in computer science and software development.  I assume no prior knowledge in programming, but basic familiarity with computers is helpful.  This is not a course on how to use Windows or word-processing.  This course will be very useful to anyone interested in science, engineering, math, business, economics, or just using a computer to simplify your studies.  It is also a great introduction to logical thinking and procedural planning.

When:

Thursday afternoons from June 6th to August 15th (off on August 1st) – 10 weeks of instruction.

Time TBD, but probably sometime between 1-3.  I will split classes to keep them under 15 people.

Who:

I will be running at least two sections, with one targeted at older students and adults who have had at least Algebra.  The other section will target students from around 3rd grade and up.  They need to be comfortable working on a computer.  Touch typing skills are very helpful, but not required (fast hunt-and-peck is ok, but you need to know where the keys are or it will be painful).

Logistics:

The class will be run in our home in the North Four Hills area in the South-Eastern part of Albuquerque.  The cost will be $150 for the entire summer.  Students should have access to a computer at home to work on assignments.  Each week will consist of a 1 hour lecture, and a 1 hour lab time where students have an opportunity to bring a laptop and get help with programs.  The lab time is optional.  I will also be available to answer questions during the week via email.

About the Instructor:

Samuel has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Missouri-Rolla and has taught courses at the university level.  He was an adjunct faculty at Drury University, and currently works at Sandia National Laboratories.

Please let me know by May 23rd if you are interested in this opportunity.  Adults are welcome and encouraged to participate along with their children (or alone).

Hello - We will be moving to the Albuquerque area early July from Oregon.  I have 2 children (son entering 7th grade and daughter entering 9th) - we have always been independent homeschoolers.  I currently run a large homeschool group in my area which I began nearly 5 years ago!  As such, we are used to a full range of activities to choose from and hope to find something similar in NM.  Any advice as to active homeschool groups, teen homeschool activities and/or areas where there is a lot to do would be helpful!  Looking forward to meeting new folks when we get settled.  Thanks in advance!
Ann

Hello Co-op Families,

Starting May 2 we will begin our park hopping again.

The first park is going to be Hartnett Park in Los Ranchos. The address is 6718 Rio Grande Blvd. NW 87107. Just as before, we will stay at each park for 1 month.

Now that the weather is so nice, we hope to see a lot of members at park days. Please let people who don’t use the boards know about the change.

Happy hopping everyone!

Also, please feel free to post suggestions for parks to visit.

hello everyone! blessings!
I am a single mom, and will be home schooling my 10 yr old daughter this coming year.  We don't know a lot of other home school families, but know we are not all alone in this.  I would love to meet up with other families and do activities with them.  Also, my daughter has some learning disabilities, so if anyone has some experience with this, I would appreciate any tips.  thanks so much!

My daughter and I are new to homeschooling - as of about a month ago.  ADHD and dyslexia just don't work well in a 25 student noisy class.  She is currently in 5th grade, almost 11 years old.  . I'm joining hoping to do field trips and other activities.  We attended Thursday in the park last week, and met many very nice parents and children.

Did you know that the ancient Egyptians multiplied numbers without a multiplication table, using the same algorithm that digital computers use today? Greek school-children could construct a large variety of perfect geometric shapes using a compass and straight edge.  The modern notational system we use for mathematics today is the result of a several thousand year epic struggle to understand relationships in the world around us, abstract out the universal nature of those relationships and use logic to reason about relationships in general.  The introduction of new mathematical models and concepts at different points in history often revolutionized science and technology.  Many concepts that we consider pedestrian today, such as zero and infinity were revolutionary developments at the time.  The introduction of the decimal system made new ways of thinking possible.

The sad reality is that most adults have never studied any of this.  Mathematics in K-12 is presented as a series of facts and techniques to be learned, rather than the result of an epic struggle that is still ongoing.  There is a huge disconnect between what most people think mathematicians must do, and what they actual pursue.

We are starting a new class for children whose parents want them to see the bigger picture and experience mathematics in a new way.  This four week class is the first stage in the development of an experimental curriculum.  At this stage it is appropriate as a supplement to a regular math curriculum.  Each week we will study a period of history and some of the interesting mathematical developments and techniques from that period. Although many of the concepts presented are not typically covered until later stages of education, they will be presented in a context and with clear explanations that should make them accessible to 3rd-6th graders.  This first class will focus on the ancient period primarily covering the mathematics of the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks.

We will meet the month of May, for 2 hours/week on Thursday afternoons from 1-3PM, in SE Albuquerque. We are in the process of procuring a location.  The cost will be $50 for the initial 4 week run.  It is our intent to continue offering additional courses after this first trial.

Prerequisites - Students should be comfortable reading and with basic arithmetic through long division.  Some exposure to fractions is helpful but not required.  Advanced younger students who meet these requirements are welcome.  We need at least 10 signed up to offer the course.

About the instructor - Samuel has a PhD in Computer Science with numerous publications.  In undergraduate school, he minored in history, and mathematics and continued taking graduate level courses in both throughout his education.  Samuel has served as an adjunct faculty for Drury University teaching several courses at the undergraduate level.  For the last 9 years, Samuel has been on staff at Sandia National Laboratories, but recently switched to a part-time schedule to pursue K-12 curriculum development.  In addition to working with his wife Emily to homeschool their four children,  Samuel has also offered classes to local homeschool students in computer science. You can read more about our philosophy of education on our blog: http://www.educationreimagined.org

Please email us at smulder2000@yahoo.com if you are definitely or might be interested so that we can gauge interest and work out the logistical details.  If you are interested in the concept but that time doesn't work for you, please let us know and we may consider adjusting or a second offering.

Thank you!

Hello Home School Parents. My 10 year old son will be finishing the 4th grade at APS and we have decided to home school him for 5th grade. I feel confident I can meet his academic needs, but he is a very social guy and am concerned that he will miss his buddies. I would like to connect with the home school community while he is still at APS to smooth the transition. He is outgoing and loves science, building, math and games. Since he will be in school during the normal park day, are there other opportunities for him to meet children either in the evenings, weekends or when he gets out early on Wednesdays? I appreciate any responses!
